Lumbar Spine Surgery
Lumbar spine surgery can treat a number of disorders of the lower spine. Symptoms may include pain, weakness, and less mobility. Causes include age, injury, or disease such as arthritis that can cause herniation of the discs between the vertebrae. This results in pressure on the spinal nerves.
You may be a candidate for surgery if:
- Conservative therapy such as medication and physical therapy does not relieve symptoms
- Symptoms involving the nerves in your legs are getting worse
- You begin to have trouble with balance or walking
Your orthopedic surgeon can perform several different surgical procedures to relieve pressure on your spinal nerves. In some cases, spinal fusion may also be performed to improve the stability of your cervical spine.
After surgery, your surgeon will give you specific instructions on when you can resume normal activities such as driving, exercising, and returning to work. In some cases, patients also need to undergo a period of rehabilitation or physical therapy to help restore more normal function.
