Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and perform various screening tests.

 Essential Functions   

  • Obtain blood specimens and collect nonblood specimens such as urine, and laboratory testing.
  • Perform screening tests under Technologist supervision.
  • Process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Prepare specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Resolve ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory.
  • Refer unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens.
  • Make the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
  • Attend staff meetings and training, as required.
  • Contribute to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices.
  • Keep work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Complete annual education requirements.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Wear BCMS issued identification badge while on duty.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.
  • Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices.
  • Ensure adequate staffing of assigned departments.
  • Fingernail requirements/restrictions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Previous experience or education in a health-related field helpful.
  • Phlebotomy certification, preferred.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

  • Must satisfactorily complete the on-the-job training provided by the Phlebotomy/Accession Lab Supervisor during a probationary period unless extension is granted by the laboratory manager.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and certification for CPR preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including effective communication, both oral and written.
  • Proven professional judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations.
  • Work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize scheduling of work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all staff, medical, financial, and/or legal related information.
  • Complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
