Ultrasound Technologist

Job Summary

Performs two dimensional (2-D) ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs.

Essential Functions

  • Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
  • Perform invasive ultrasound procedures, doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.
  • Select appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
  • Explain the test to the patient. Instruct and assist the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; make appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
  • Select a transducer and adjust the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
  • Enter test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
  • Move transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observe sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
  • Discuss test results with supervisor or attending physician.
  • Perform all quality control checks, as prescribed.
  • Maintain accurate QC logs, service records, etc.
  • Understand and practice proper use of all equipment; never operate equipment inconsistent with manufacturer’s instruction.
  • Calibrate, clean and perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; clean and sterilize instruments, supplies and equipment; stock and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Ensure documentation meets current standards and hospital policy.
  • Provide care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines set forth in BCMS policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonograph, or successful completion of an approved one-year program in ultrasound technology, required.
  • Certification in area of specialty, required.
  • Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required.
  • One year of radiologic/imaging experience, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

  • Excellent knowledge of ultrasound equipment.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including effective communication, both oral and written.
  • Proven professional judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations.
  • Work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
